Big Island Sportfishing

Big Game Fish Close The Calm Waters of the Kona Coast

For guests of our bed and breakfast that are looking for a great adventure and a wonderful day in the sun and deep blue waters off the coast of the Big Island, big game sport fishing off the Kona Coast is one of the great Hawaiian activities that many guests thoroughly enjoy. Compared to fishing in other areas of the Pacific (close to the US mainland), you will drop bait and start fishing very close to the shores of the Big Island. Since the island is mostly of volcanic rock, it drops very sharply and goes very deep just a mile or two from the harbor.

Marlin are caught, tagged and released daily off the Kona coast. Inhabiting Kona's cobalt blue waters are the acrobatic striped marlin, the powerful Pacific blue marlin (occasionally weighing in over 1,000 pounds) and the black marlin.

In addition to marlin, there are many other exciting big game fish, such as the beautiful spearfish, Pacific sailfish, the ferocious ono (wahoo), the wild and colorful mahimahi, the tackle-testing ahi (yellowfin tuna), and several other species of tuna. Kona's variety of big game, blue water fish appeals to the experienced angler and the novice alike. The Kona Coast of Hawaii has the finest big game and Blue Marlin fishing in the world.

Grand Slam Sportfishing is our favorite sportfishing outfitter. Captain Bob and his Crew, focus on the total experience of the day, which begins with freshly brewed Kona coffee. Upon leaving the harbor the lines will be set and the Hawaii fishing experience begins with "Marlin 101". A thorough review of the Kona fishing equipment and Hawaii fishing techniques is given to all anglers so everyone is primed for that all important strike! Click below to visit their site

The Sportfishing Experience

The day usually will start out with the running of five or six lures trolling for marlin, spear fish, mahi mahi, ono, and yellowfin tuna. If this bite is slow we will try live baiting for these species with small skip jack tuna that you will have to catch ! If the bite is really slow we will take live or dead bait and drop it to the bottom for amberjack, sharks, ulua, and snapper. If you have children in your party we also offer reef fishing with light tackle which is a lot of fun and keeps them very busy. Please let us know what you are looking for in your day of fishing and we will do our best to fulfill your dreams !! You will find that the Grand Slam catches more variety and numbers of fish than any boat in the Kona fleet. We have for the past ten years and plan to do so in the years to come.

Sport Fishing at Its Best

While catching a giant Blue Marlin is the most exciting Kona sportfishing experience,  a  kona fishing charter offers the angler many other big game fishing options. Along with the great Kona sport fishing, there are many other reasons for fishing Kona Hawaii. The beautiful mountains towering above the calm waters, the many wild mammals that inhabit Hawaii waters such as humpback whales, porpoise, pilot whales, whale sharks and many other types of marine mammals all add to the lore of Kona sport fishing.
